CFS™ Bags for Families

Engaging families in supporting children’s speaking and listening is essential. Within the new EYFS there is a renewed emphasis on two-way sharing of information with families to better understand and support the child. There is also a focus on the importance of the home environment. Bags for Families offer a fabulous way to engage families and open up effective dialogue between the home and setting/school.

Each bag offers a range of different open ended resources for families to use in and around the home environment, encouraging playing and exploring, active learning and opportunities to create and think critically. Contents reflect the core principles of CFS™.

Feedback from 50 CFS™ Bags for Families projects in Liverpool showed:

  • 17% increase in effective two-way communication with families
  • 6% increase in talking with the familiy on a regular basis and a 42% increase in terms of these conversations focusing on the child's development.
  • 26% increase in parents and carers verbally contributing to observation and assessment systems.
  • 14% increase in parent/carer initiated conversations about their child's speaking and listening skills.
  • 30% increase in parent's/carers documenting evidence of their child's preferred learning context.

Bespoke training to explore and develop this resource is available now.

A DVD made by Liverpool Local Authority includes interviews with practitioners and families involved in Bags for Families and can be viewed here.
